As the dust settles on Nikon’s huge spate of announcements this morning – two lenses, a developed lens, a new FTZ adapter, a new roadmap, and their highest-end camera ever – I’d like to put some of my thoughts to paper about the releases. Good and bad, what do these announcements say about Nikon’s future?

1. Sports are no longer the holdout of DSLRs
The first sign that mirrorless cameras would replace DSLRs for sports and wildlife photography was Sony’s announcement of the A9 in August of 2017. Before that, mirrorless systems like the Nikon 1 series and Olympus’s lineup showed that fast autofocus was possible without a DSLR, but the smaller sensor sizes of those systems hardly threatened the full-frame cameras of the time like the Canon 1DX II and Nikon D5.
In recent years, Sony and Canon have both released a number of sports-oriented mirrorless cameras like the Sony A9 II, Sony A1, Canon EOS R5, and Canon EOS R3. All of these cameras are good enough to tempt professional sports photographers, but none of them are Nikon cameras. And while not every photographer is loyal to one particular brand or another, plenty of us are. The sizable number of pro Nikon shooters have had little option but to stick with DSLRs for the highest-end sports and wildlife photography needs.
The Nikon Z9 may be later to the market than ideal, but it’s a whopper. The combination of form factor, frame rate, and resolution sets the Nikon Z9 apart from almost everything else that exists at the moment, with only the Sony A1 plus an external grip being in the same league (see our full Nikon Z9 vs Sony A1 comparison here). Assuming that the Z9’s autofocus stands up to scrutiny, it’s a more advanced camera than the Nikon D6 in almost every way (see our D6 vs Z9 comparison). It clearly shows that mirrorless cameras can do more than just match a DSLR for action photography needs, but exceed them.
2. Man, some longer lenses would be nice
All three of the Nikon lenses that were announced or pre-announced today can reach focal lengths longer than 100mm. So, why does the telephoto end of things still feel lacking?
Yes, Nikon did a development announcement for the 400mm f/2.8 that looks like an absolutely stunning lens. But there’s no shipping date attached, and with the manufacturing issues that companies are having these days, any shipment date before mid-2022 seems optimistic. Meanwhile, Canon is already shipping a 400mm f/2.8 and 600mm f/4, as well as a 600mm f/8 and 800mm f/11 for budget options. Sony is in a similar position, with a 400mm f/2.8, 600mm f/4, and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3.
Nikon does relieve some of the pressure with their long-awaited 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom, which should start shipping in early 2022. However, it’s still an f/5.6 zoom, and the longest focal length of 400mm at f/5.6 is something that Z-series shooters already had (with the 70-200mm f/2.8 and 2x teleconverter).
I give Nikon credit for their really excellent wide-angles and primes so far for the Z system. Lenses like the 20mm f/1.8, 14-24mm f/2.8, and 50mm f/1.8 are some of the best available today – not just from Nikon but any manufacturer. And their two current stabs at the telephoto end (the 24-200mm f/4-6.3 and 70-200mm f/2.8) have been some of Nikon’s bestsellers and are great lenses at their respective jobs.
The issue is that the Z9 is the type of camera meant to be paired with a 300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 500mm f/4, 600mm f/4, or 800mm f/5.6. None of those exist in native lenses at the moment. Yes, Nikon will eventually fill in the gaps at their longer focal lengths (they even added mysterious 400mm and 800mm lenses to their roadmap today), but they’ll bleed market share to Canon and Sony until they do.
3. Look ma, no mechanical shutter!
Maybe the thing that took me by surprise the most about the Nikon Z9 announcement is that it doesn’t have a mechanical shutter. This is a first from Nikon and a surprisingly bold move.
But it also makes sense. One reason why? It’s that word unlimited in the estimated shutter life.
Cameras like the Nikon D6 and Z9 are intended to be high-end, professional workhorses that photographers use to capture tens of thousands of pictures per day if necessary. Even the best shutter curtains on the market wear out. So, Nikon says, let’s go with a stacked CMOS sensor and avoid the shutter curtain entirely.
This does come with its own issues. We’ll have to test the Z9 carefully to see if flicker is a problem in artificial light, as well as rolling shutter with especially fast-moving subjects. But Nikon says the Z9’s readout speed is the fastest on the market, and I’m sure that a lot of effort went into fixing these obvious issues before the internet loudly complains about them.
Add that to the top-notch weather sealing on the Z9, and this should be a camera that can take a beating and plenty of professional use.
4. $5500 is a much lower price than I expected
Nikon has been on a low price kick with some of their newest camera releases, like the Z7 II starting for $400 less than the original Z7. But even with that in mind, I didn’t expect the Z9 would sell for anything less than $6000.
For context, the Nikon D6 DSLR is still currently selling new for $6500 and is out of stock right now, presumably because the supply hasn’t kept up with the demand. And the Z9 is simply a better camera than the D6. Nikon easily would have been justified selling it for $6500, and it still would have been out of stock for months. Maybe they were concerned that it would invite unfavorable comparisons against the $6500 Sony A1, so they lowered the price dramatically?
All I can do is speculate. And recommend that if you’re planning to get this camera, you really should put your name on the list sooner than later.
5. Is this the right path for an FTZII?
Nikon has finally released a smaller, slimmer, lighter FTZ adapter, which they’re calling the FTZII. It has all the same functionality as the previous FTZ other than the lack of a tripod socket, which wasn’t that useful anyway.
Yet I’m already seeing some complaints about the FTZII online. The issue is that Nikon still hasn’t added full compatibility with certain old lenses, and now it’s starting to seem like they never will.
I’m a bit torn about this. What Nikon ideally should have done is – in 2018 – release the first FTZ adapter with full compatibility. That means autofocus with AF-D and older AF lenses, as well as an aperture feeler ring to provide full EXIF data with non-CPU lenses. Yes, it would have been a more complex and expensive adapter, but it certainly would have been possible. (Even autofocus with old manual focus lenses would have been possible if Nikon put their mind to it; see the Megadap version for autofocusing Leica lenses on the Z system.)
But alongside it – or at least at some point – Nikon should have announced essentially what we got today: an FTZ II that’s lighter, smaller, and more ergonomic for use with modern AF-S and AF-P lenses. Plenty of Nikon shooters don’t need full compatibility with old lenses and are perfectly fine with the FTZ II’s slimmed-down design. This is clearly a better-designed adapter than the awkward FTZ we’ve been using.
In other words, I don’t have a problem with the FTZ II, even though some photographers online are criticizing it for retaining the FTZ’s compatibility issues. Instead, my problem remains with the original FTZ adapter. Sure, that ship has probably sailed – I doubt we’ll get an adapter with full compatibility with old lenses – but it remains the source for some lingering discontent among Nikon Z shooters.
6. The standard zoom is 24-120mm rather than 24-105
For a while, the Nikon Z lens roadmap has said we’d get a 24-105mm S eventually. And although that may appease some photographers who complained about the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4’s short zoom range, the difference between 70mm and 105mm isn’t exactly massive.
Instead, Nikon surprised us today with the 24-120mm‘s announcement. That’s a full extra 15mm!
Okay, the difference between 105mm and 120mm also isn’t massive. But 70mm versus 120mm is a different story. A 24-70mm f/4 is a lightweight, small zoom with a limited range; a 24-120mm f/4 is a slightly larger but more comprehensive lens that doesn’t really need a telephoto lens to pair with it. 24-105mm is at an awkward place in between.
Nikon was smart to differentiate their f/4 zooms this way. I was already prepared to write a 24-105mm f/4 review that labeled it a bit redundant, and now I don’t think I can make that argument any more.
7. My roadmap prediction was (so far) untrue
A few months ago, I said that we were nearing the end of Nikon’s roadmap, and as much as I liked it, I was concerned they wouldn’t release another. Turns out they took me by surprise (and the rumor mill as well) by announcing a revamped version of the roadmap today.
I’ll save you the click: There are five previously unknown lenses on the roadmap now. Nikon has added a 12-28mm DX lens, a 24mm compact DX lens, a 26mm compact FX lens, a 400mm prime (not the f/2.8 one!), and an 800mm prime.
Yes, still no 70-200mm f/4 or other lightweight telephoto zoom. Seems like Nikon is really pushing for those of us who want a lightweight telephoto to give into the allure of the 24-200mm f/4-6.3. Of course, it could always be a surprise announcement, or maybe Nikon will eventually add it to the roadmap anyway and they’re just having trouble with it for some reason.
No matter – what’s exciting is that the roadmap isn’t dead. I’m a big fan of knowing what to expect from companies whose equipment I use. Nikon surprised me this time, and hopefully they keep up the roadmap in the coming years, too.
8. I’m glad to be a Nikon shooter
This brief article – written after a long, sleepless night working on our Z9 coverage – probably has more criticisms (and typos) than it should. My biggest takeaway from the Nikon Z9 release isn’t that the FTZ adapters are mediocre or even that we need more telephoto options. It’s that I’m still seriously glad I’m a Nikon shooter to this day.
Even in a pandemic year, Nikon has managed to release a camera that is unprecedented on today’s market and undeniably their most advanced camera ever. They’ve marched through their lens roadmap steadily and with a few nice surprises along the way (like the longer maximum focal length on the 24-120mm f/4). And despite fierce competition against Canon and Sony, they’ve held their own and released some of the best cameras and lenses available today – both at a given price and just in general.
I chose Nikon when I first started photography because I saw some sensor tests that showed good image quality compared to Canon. It wasn’t the most informed decision and bordered on random chance, but I’m glad I went this route. My Nikon Z6 with the 14-30mm f/4 and 24-200mm f/4-6.3 is the best travel kit I can think of today – other than upgrading to the second version of the camera – and I’m looking forward to adding the 40mm f/2 to the set when it ships.
Other photographers I know are shooting with the Z7 II and the full set of f/2.8 zooms, which Nikon has completely knocked out of the park. The 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8 are each the best example of their type of lens that we’ve ever tested at Photography Life. The image quality you can get with that system is near the peak of what’s available today.
Nikon has shown that they’re sometimes slower to release a product than the other brands, but when they do, they usually get it right. Today’s Z9 announcement – pending tests to make sure it lives up to the specs – makes that clear to me.
I am patiently waiting for the announcement for the 300 2.8s lens. The Z teleconverters are designed to be used with Z mount lenses and combined with the 300mm s lens, this is a very flexible system designed for a variety of photography. The 400 2.8s and 800 2.8 lens are more specialized and much more expensive than the 300 2.8 lenses.
With such level of technology, I and many others who have used the very small and very lightweight One system Nikons, wish Nikon would bring that system back again. I havn’t used other small systems, but I just assume a Nikon 1 70-300 CX lens, very sharp and having about 200-810 mm angle of view, with excellent performance, for hobby photographers, and creative photography, went so much unnoticed. I have read few professionals that carry and use that system. Carrying such a lightweight system is also a necessity for older people. That lense’s possibilities alone makes room for some unique photos. It has interesting macro abilities too. I also think it was almost never given the right value as a special purpose camera. The small pixels caught details in favourable light, that was noticeably sharper than larger pixels. Maybe it is just me that sees advance advertising makes a huge difference in success or failure of a brand or product. Quickly taking out a lightweight system with a very short and sharp about 200-800mm is so much fun. Big thanks to Thomas Stirr and photographylife for getting me to One system. I assume many pros using Nikon, mostly missed out on that One :) that practically made additional joy to creative photography possible.
About super teles, Canon just attached a converter and call it done. I am sure I can get a FTZii and my 180-400 F mount lens will work as well on Z9. I am happy Nikon is taking their time redesigning their lenses for the Z mount. Dont’t get me wrong, all late F mount teles are great already.
No doubt. The Nikon supertelephotos are some of the best lenses with the FTZ adapter at the moment. There wouldn’t be much benefit for Nikon to just “attach the converter and call it done,” as you say.
For me the best announcement was 24-120 f/4.
Unfortunately I’m still thinking about switching because all the Z system is compact but in a definition of pro-shooter, not a regular consumer. For example the weight of Z9 vs D6 is peanuts. All Z lenses are still two big for me. But that just me.
Nikon is starting to make it a bit more compact with the 28mm and 40mm lenses, but a few more would be nice. Especially a lightweight telephoto! We’ll see. I’m sure Nikon would like to make all these eventually, it’s just a matter of prioritization.
Like Spencer and many others, I am also wondering how long it will take for some of the Z9 goodies, especially the new AF features, to trickle down to future Z6 & 7 bodies. Perhaps most of the Z9 components (sensor, processor, buffer, card slots, blackout free viewfinder, etc.) can be packed into a body only modestly larger than a Z7? Heck, they can call it a Z8. Video capability would likely be compromised without the heat management of the massive Z9 body, but I’m guessing a great many customers would be ok with an hour of 4K at 60p in a smaller form factor at a price between a Z7 and Z9. An optional battery grip could ensure still speeds and endurance comparable to a Z9. I also wonder if the new processor has enough reserve horsepower for computational tricks down the road. At least for now Nikon appears to have the tech to satisfy demanding use cases at the high end as well as any other brand, which is good no matter what brand one shoots.
Nikon has been on a 2 year cycle between the Z6 and the Z6II. If they continue that pattern, we’re likely to see a Z6III or Z8 sometime next fall. If Nikon is really aggressive, they could announce a Z8 in spring or summer 2022 and Z6III/Z7III in fall 2022 or spring 2023. I think all users are hoping Nikon releases a small body Z9 as quickly as possible.

Thanks for your summary and perspective on the recent announcement; it was very well done. I’m really glad that Nikon seems to now be obviously back at or near the top of their game. While I’m not in the market for a Z9, the lens announcements give me pause. I like the range of the 24-120 and wish Nikon had released it instead of the 24-70 f4; I recently bought the 24-200 for travel and am not sure I want to buy another 24 to xx lens. It doesn’t look like Nikon has any interest in a 70-300 Z lens so I have to think about the 100-400 or live with my F mount AF/P version.
with marketing it is always about what they don’t state:
I would like to see the dynamic range of this new sensor, and would not be surprised if the d850 / Z7 is still king… at iso 64…
For me it is about better quality photographs – i can see the z9 is able to make more keepers and new keepers that would not be possible with older cameras.
Only the latest S-line lenses can combine the use of the VR-Camera+VR-lens.
Nevertheless a very exiting release from Nikon above expectations.. well done Nikon!
Two things so far I do not like about the Z9:
1. Small shoulder display. Compare it to the D3,4,5,6. Why not make it twice as wide?
2. The mode button is on the left side. Finito with changing the mode with just your right hand. You need two. Why is that bad? I ran in situations where I hold a longer lens (left hand) and the camera is set (as is 75% of the time) to aperture priority but then I have to switch to manual mode (with auto ISO) for just one shot an back to ‘A’. That is no longer possible with just one hand.
Regarding the first point, the only thing that came to my mind about the square shoulder display is that I think the shoulder display will rotate when you’re holding the camera in the vertical position so it’s easier to read without needing to tilt your head. A square display allows it to rotate without needing to rearrange all of the information. I’m not sure if that’s the reason or not, but it’s possible.
biggest take away for a hobby/amateur shooter, future looks bright. I am waiting for some of these big things to drop down to APSC. I like to print out my photos and having albums every year is big fun to look back. I have been supporting Nikon for more than 15 years, therefore I am really glad that they might have managed to release something that big like the Z9
News flash. Most all sports photographers abandoned Nikon decades ago and have never returned. The EOS had features it has taken Nikon 30 years to catch up with. Sensor wise the difference in real life is negligible in the final product.
Canon was brilliant by taking the superior 600mm and 800mm L lenses and changing the mount to the RF. That is the beauty that ALL EF lenses are 100% compatible with RF cameras unlike Nikon.
The Z9 is a catchup camera not class leading if you look closely.
Nice camera for Nikon holdouts but nothing to make Sony or Canon users to jump ship like Nikon users did jumping to Canon with the vastly superior EOS system.
And think of how many people have already jumped ship from Canon to Sony because Sony got to professional mirrorless first. However, it’s not necessarily about getting people to jump ship from one brand to another. What about people who are getting into photography now and looking to pick a brand? Nikon is showing that they are definitely a viable pick for people who haven’t dedicated themselves to a brand. Nikon’s Z-mount also has several advantages over Canon’s RF mount that will allow Nikon to do with some unique lenses.
