Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Compared
I said on the previous page of this review that the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is a surprisingly sharp lens. But how does it hold up head-to-head against some of the alternatives? Here are our MTF results from several of this lens’s competitors so you can judge for yourself.
It’s amazing to me how similar the performance of the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is to the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM. Both lenses are fantastic performers with very similar highs and lows. The Sony 20mm f/1.8 GM and Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S are both sharper in the corners than the Viltrox and are arguably the sharpest two lenses here. The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 sadly isn’t even a comparison (although that lens had a different design goal in mind, aiming to be as light as possible). Finally, the three high-end zoom lenses shown here actually have somewhat sharper corners than the Viltrox, but are weaker in the center.
Given that the lenses in this comparison are almost all best-in-class optics, it’s exciting to see the Viltrox completely holding its own. Even more so when you consider the price.
