I am a landscape photographer and always use the camera on a tripod. I use manual focus, often in conjunction with the hyperfocal markings which Nikon put on their lenses. There is a feature of the D610 which makes it ideal for landscape work, but which no other Nikon SLRs have, as far as I am aware. I am referring to the infra-red remote shutter release provided by Nikon’s ML-L3 remote release. The D610 has infra-red receiving windows front and rear. The shutter release mode needs to be set to the “ML-L3” position between the “Self-Timer” and “Mirror-Up” positions. As well, in the “Shooting Menu” the “Quick-Response Remote” option will need to be set. The first push of the release button raises the mirror and the second push releases the shutter. With this method of shutter release, I do not need to touch the camera to release the shutter. My photos are razor sharp because of this.

Thank you for this very detailed comparison, and excellent article. I’ve owed the D7000 for several years and loved that camera, along with a D300s. Still regretting selling the D300s, but the D610 seemed to me to be the next camera to move up too fro both cameras, and I have loved the D610 ever since. Like both cameras in one, but full frame. I also still have a D700, and as most know; the D700 is in a class all of it’s own. I was happy to see the D700 held up very well against the D610 in the ISO noise testing, something I already knew, but great to see it in a controlled test. I also have a D7200, one of the best Nikon DX cameras offered. Super crisp, clear photos, and gives the additional reach with the 1.5x with FX lenses. I do find the D610 becoming more and more my everyday shooter as I head out the door, and used more as my main camera for paid jobs with the 700, or 7200 depending on what’s needed. Thanks for your article, and reading about my camera kids.

Great review, I’ve had my D7000 since it was released. I have many prime lenses and the D7000 has done amazingly for me. I have a D610 arriving today…got it and and a couple great FX lenses at an amazing price. First step into FX, but I’m sure my D7000 will quickly become my back up camera. Love the review, very informative.

Is the D 610 still a good camera? Has it been outmoded by later models?
Dead right. It’s become a real used bargain – I paid more than that just 2 1/2 years ago. Also got my 24-85 and 70-200/f4 for it used. I use it for landscapes and non-moving nature photos and it fits the bill perfectly. For the rest I use a D7500 and (used) 300/f4 and 1.4TC.

Hi Nasim I like to purchase a new body of D610 as Adorama has sale with very attractive price and with free goodies. My point is I heard a lot of negative about D610 but as a photographer since 20 years I rely on the positive reviews. Pls advice me. Thanks in advance.
I was so impressed with my first D610 two years ago, recently purchased a second to keep on a dedicated prime lens. I would highly recommend “Roberts Cameras” and their online store UsedPhotoPro. Phone 317-917-7055 USA Illinois. As a somewhat “pro” over the past 40 years, this camera does everything I could ask and the staff at Roberts’ have been very helpful when fielding questions from this East Tennessee ridge runner photographer.

Great review! I picked my d610 up in 2015 and still love it today. Just something about that sensor. I have two questions though. #1: I see you’ve updated the review this month but I can’t tell what’s been updated. Can you please point that out? #2: I see you set your U2 for people to shoot at 12 bit instead of 14 bit. What’s the reason behind that?

Is the D 610 still a good camera? Has it been outmoded by later models?
Yes and perhaps. It’s only outmoded if you want loads of pixels or very serious autofocus. But think how much you have to pay for a D850 or D5.
Got a d610 for just 599.- Eur .. first steps into FX .. amazing cam and for that price a steal!
