I have one of these with the FTZ adapter on my Z6 and Z9, and it still holds up incredibly well. It’s quite noisy and a little slower to focus than the new Z 50mm/f1.8 from what I’ve read, plus the new Z glass is superior in every way, which is no doubt true. And yet I haven’t yet felt the need to upgrade. This lens is a bargain and punches well above its weight.

This is a very helpful review. I have a D7200 with various lenses. The Nikon 35mm DX f/1. 8 serves as a standard for crop sensor. Looking at this for a tighter shot. The debate I have with myself is whether I really need this. The reason is that I own the excellent 16-80mm 2.8-4E lens with the gold ring. The 50mm prime will be at 75mm equivalent on that lens. But at that focal length, the otherwise excellent zoom lens opens at 4.0.
Another concern I have is how the aperture conversion works when an FX lens is mounted on a DX body.
At this point, I am not looking for 3rd-party lenses. I just sold off my Sigma lenses. Because, I will upgrade to a Z6-II likely and any new lens I end up buying must be usable there. Although, I know that the Z50mm prime is way better (and way more expensive)!
For Aperture conversion there is 2 answers as aperture help with exposure and depth of field … As for the exposure the lens will be as fast as it is on FX (so no change in shatter speed)… The depth of field will be divided by the crop factor… so 50mm 1.8 will give you a equivalent field of view of 75mm (in Nikon system) and as fast as f/1.8 but the depth of field won’t be as shallow as 75mm 1.8 on an FX body (maybe equivalent to 2.5)… Search depth of field calculator and play with numbers and you’ll get used to it

Nasim After reading your test two years later I bought it, and only joy on my D750 & D500. I still have the 1,8D, the main thing that I didn’t like is the focus barrel turning everytime it acquires focus and no AF-S, and its construction is only decent.

Was there really an update or was that just some SEO trickery?

Thanks for the review !
I currently own the 50/1.8G which has produced good images for me on my D810. Now that I’ve switched to a D850, I’m considering other options, such as the Sigma 50/1.4 Art. Have you had the opportunity to test these lenses and/or any other 50mm options on the D850?
Thanks a lot for the review. I am using Nikon D3300 and still using the kit lense. I am planning to buy a prime lense. now i am confused between 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm f/1.8G lense. Please suggest me which 1 is better and I should buy to learn good photography. Awaiting for your revert
35mm f/1.8G, it will be at 52mm equivalent, very good all purpose prime lens

Hi Nasim
Thanks a lot for a gr8 review. I do not see anything about the focus shift in Your article. I use this lens coupled with D750. Also the Software Reikan FoCal (i am sure that you know it) shows me a different MA values when I calibrate at 1.8 and at 2.8. Is this normal for 50mm 1.8G? Have You noticed any focus shift problem ?
Older lens image difference
