Including your article, as well as many others I have read regarding this lens; it seems most are judging its use, or non-use based on everyday photography needs like one would with most other lenses.
I have had great success using this lens with a light-box for shooting sharp, highly detailed close-ups of very small items.
My light-box has a circle of lights in the top that can be dimmed to my taste and there is a lid on the top, in the middle of the light circle which opens allowing me to shoot down on the object without the lens getting in the way of the light source.
I can’t say this lens was made for this purpose since I haven’t seen it mentioned in any of the articles I’ve read so far. All I can say is that it works great this way.

Hello Nasim, great article, thank you.
In your article, I read “What I discovered, is that the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G is excellent for photographing flowers, food and other medium-size objects, but not so suitable for photographing smaller subjects”.
I would like to ask you what macro lens would you recommend to shoot insect. I have D7500.
Thanks.
Art Daniel.

A question for you. My camera is a NIKON D5100. In the last week I bought the AF-S micro NIKKOR 40mm 1:2.8 G lens for it. It worked for two pics perfectly then continues to give an error message: Lens not attached, F–. I cannot get the shutter to work, and the flash does not work. Any thoughts to get function back? Sincerely, Art Daniel.

I live in a small town in the mountains and looking for a good landscape lens for my Nikon D3. Would this be suitable or another that would capture the wide landscapes we have?

Nasim,
First time I have read one of your write ups and I was so impressed I bought the lens. It came today. I am a returning photographer who did this wonderful hobby many years ago when I was a young man. How I loved my Cannon A1 . But due to life’s problems I had to sell my gear to make ends meet rather than go homeless. 30 years have passed and due to illness I am now retired from work and decided to get back into the one thing I always had passion for. I call them ‘ my forever moments ‘. I really wanted the 105mm but alas I simply could not afford it and as I am interested in other aspects of photography there is no way my wife would have gone for me spending that kind of money so the 40mm it had to be. Saying that I’m very happy to have got it and hopefully come Sunday I will be out testing it for myself on my D200 & D300s . My kit is building nicely and by the time this seasons 1940’s scene starts again combined with the odd Airshow I should be in quite a healthy state .
Kind regards.

Hi Nasim, i have been reading/visiting your site and i find it very informative and helpful. i am an amateur but enthousiast about photography. i own a Nikon D7000 camera that got along with a kit lens 18-105mm f/3,5-5,6G. last year i bought a nikkon 50mm f/1,4G lens that i use mostly nowadays. i am thinking to buy one more lens but the more i read the more confused i get as my budget is not big – max 800- 1000€. do you have a suggestion for me? mostly i am an everyday photographer but I like makro photography as well.
thanks for your time and suggestions, elisa

Hi Nasim,
I’m new to your website and find it to be very informative and interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I love your articles, tutorials and reviews and find them very easy to understand and follow.
I’m an amateur and currently own D7100 with 50mm 1.8G & 70-300VR. Macro has caught my interest lately, especially bugs, and I’m planning to buy a good macro lens. I have read millions ; ) of reviews about different macro lenses and am still confused to make a decision. The lenses which appeal to me right now are Nikon 105mm 2.8G, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM, and Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di because of their good working distance and IQ. Can you suggest me best macro for my camera please from the selection above or any other lens within my budget (<$1000).
