If you do photography in a studio, you probably have a few shot bags laying around. This very small shot bag has a variety of uses.

2) Field Use
Shot bags have a few different uses around the studio and in the field. Typically, they are used for securing light stands, acting as counterweights for boom stands or weighing down seamless paper or set pieces. Weighing in at only 5 lbs, this bag isn’t useful for securing light stands or large set pieces. It’s just not heavy enough to safely secure a light stand or to act as a weight for large set pieces.
What I did find it useful for was holding down the corners of backdrops and seamless paper. Instead of taping my backdrop down, I was able to just put down a few shot bags to hold the paper in place. If I needed to reposition my background, I didn’t have to pull up a bunch of tape. I just moved the bags, repositioned my background and kept shooting.
If you use a boom stand you’ll need a counterweight to balance the weight of the light. This small shot bag might come in useful as a counterweight if you’re using a speedlight, but definitely wouldn’t be enough to offset the weight of a monolight with a beauty dish or softbox attached.
I have a 25 lb sand bag that I use all of the time to secure my light stands. When I ordered this 5 lb shot bag, I guess I didn’t realize how small it really was. It’s way too small to use to secure a light stand. Fortunately, it’s the perfect weight for holding down the corners of seamless paper or fabric backdrops. Given the price, it’s much cheaper to just buy a roll of gaffer tape, but if you want something that you can easily and quickly reposition or use forever, this would be a great option.
