If you’re a portrait photographer, you probably prefer softer light to more harsh light. I know I do. When I first used the Impact Flourescent Cool Light Kit, the only thing I wished I had was a diffuser of some sort. Now I do. Here’s a quick review of the Impact 18″ Diffuser Sock
1) Product Specifications
– 18″ nylon fabric
– Elastic ring for snug fit
– Heat resistant (not for use on hot lights)
– Reduces light output by 1 stop
– Stackable for additional softening and light output reduction
2) Packaging and Field Use
The diffuser sock comes in very simple packaging. There is no storage bag for it, so you’ll have to find some way to store it and keep it clean between uses.
It’s made to go on the Impact Flourescent Cool Light. Installing it was easy. Simply stretch it across the reflector on the light and you’re done. The elastic keeps it in place so there is nothing to tighten and no way for it to fall off.
Actual use was straightforward. It did indeed soften the light, but not nearly as much as I had expected. The internal baffle on the light already does a good job of softening the light, so I think the diffuser sock merely smoothed things out a bit. If you wanted a harsher light and weren’t using the internal baffle, there would be a much more noticeable difference with the diffuser sock on. It also did decrease light output by about 1 stop.
If you already have an Impact Flourescent Cool Light and want the softest light source possible, you should consider getting this diffuser sock. Although I didn’t notice a huge difference, under varying circumstances it should help to create a softer light source. Plan ahead so that you can figure out how to store it when it’s not in use.
5) Pricing and Where to Buy
