Summary
The XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is a welcome addition to Fuji’s lens lineup. It opens up the ability for Fuji shooters to photograph sports and wildlife by offering significantly more reach than any of their other lenses. And to add to the appeal, the lens has the same high build quality that we have come to expect from Fujifilm, including extremely good weather sealing and image stabilization.
Autofocus was fast and accurate, and extremely quiet, and the resulting image quality was excellent. The lens produced sharp images throughout all focal lengths, even shot wide open. Any softness at 400mm or combined with the 1.4x TC could be mitigated by stopping down to f/8 or smaller apertures.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how well this lens performed, especially for a super-telephoto zoom. I would not hesitate to recommend it to any Fujifilm shooter looking for a lens with extended reach. If you are a DSLR owner and primarily shoot sports and wildlife, you are probably best to stick with your current system. However, if you are considering moving to a mirrorless camera for other reasons, Fuji is now a viable option if you enjoy shooting sports and wildlife as well.
