Summary
After about half a year of using the R5 I am as happy with my purchase as on the first day. It is a very powerful camera and excels at everything I’ve thrown at it so far. Before looking at the images for the first time I was a bit worried about the drop in resolution coming from the 5Ds R, but I don’t notice any real difference in image detail. On top of that, the R5 is a much more versatile camera and feels like a solid upgrade from the 5Ds R in every respect. Even my concerns about operability with gloves have not been validated and I fully trust this camera to easily withstand any conditions I would want to shoot under. If I had to name one thing that disappoints me about the camera then it’s the eyepiece that is too hard and doesn’t block sunlight very well. However, not all owners of the R5 share this concern and I am hopeful that 3rd party eyepieces will be available at some time in the future.
When Canon released their first mirrorless camera, the photography world was generally underwhelmed. It didn’t seem like Canon had taken full advantage of what mirrorless systems can do. However, with the release of the R5 Canon showed that they are capable of producing top of the line cameras with cutting edge features, such as animal eye-AF, 8K video and high frame rates. Paired with the new RF glass, these features can be fully leveraged. If you are a Canon DSLR user and have been looking to move to mirrorless you now have a truly great option with the R5 which will satisfy even most professionals.
