I took the Nikon 70-200mm VR II + TC17E II (1.7x) with me during the trip to Puerto Rico just in case I encountered something I wanted to photograph from a distance. As I was walking close to the shore, I spotted a few different types of birds and I decided to try out this combo and see what results I would get.
And here is a 100% crop of the above image:
I am very impressed with the performance of the Nikon 70-200mm VR II & TC17E II, even wide open. Historically, I have never been able to get acceptably sharp photos with the older version of the 70-200mm when used with 1.7x or 2.0x teleconverters. The new 70-200mm handles teleconverters much better than its predecessor and even works acceptably well with the new Nikon TC20E III.
At 100%, all of these images look extremely good, showing bird feathers in maximum detail.
