Sitting in the shadow of the 45 megapixel EOS R5, yet nearly as impressive, the Canon EOS R6 is a feature-packed 20 megapixel mirrorless camera built with speed in mind. In fact, most of the R6’s specifications mimic those of R5, although there are some differences here and there.
I’ll do a rundown of all the EOS R6’s features and specifications in a moment, but first, here’s the pre-order link. The R6 is likely to be in high demand, and I recommend pre-ordering if you want to be sure to get it as soon as possible:
Here are the most important specifications of the EOS R6 mirrorless camera:

You can compare this to the Canon EOS R5 announcement to see that the two cameras have very similar specifications overall.
Aside from the obvious 20 MP vs 45 MP difference, the main factor against the R6 is its slightly less extensive set of video features. The R6 is certainly no slouch in this department, but it does have a bit of a crop in 4K video (1.07×), cannot shoot RAW video, and maxes out at 60p 4K rather than 120p 4K. None of this is a dealbreaker for the vast majority of video shooters out there, and it wasn’t long ago that these features – 4K 60 FPS, with 10-bit 4:2:2 C-log, recording to an internal SD card – would have been the best in its class. But people will naturally compare the R6 to the R5, and there’s no question that the R5’s specs are even more impressive.
In little things here and there, the R6 and R5 trade places between which comes out ahead. The R6 has a slightly higher buffer and better battery life; the R5 has a higher resolution EVF and is rated to more shots. Most of these tradeoffs are minor, and I’ll cover the differences between the two cameras in more detail in a future article.
What matters more is that the R6 maxes out most of its specifications to a point rarely seen on a $2500 camera. With 20 FPS shooting (electronic shutter) and a huge buffer size, plus Canon’s pro-level build quality and layout from the 5D series of DSLRs, the R6 is a high-end camera in practically every way. Even its IBIS specifications reach new standards, with a maximum of a whopping eight stops of stabilization with certain RF lenses (including both of the kit 24-105mm lenses).
All of this combines to make a camera that is truly groundbreaking, especially at this price. For portrait, wedding, and video shooters, very few cameras on the market are so appealing. It’s also extremely competitive for sports, wildlife, travel, and documentary photography thanks to the camera’s portable size and fast frame rate (pending tests of the autofocus system to ensure it works as well as expected).
Landscape and nature photographers may hesitate when considering the R6’s 20 megapixel sensor, and it is true that other cameras at this price will give you higher resolution and better dynamic range. But this sensor – which appears to be based off of the one found in Canon’s 1DX Mark III – is still capable of excellent and detailed images in the right hands, and large print sizes as well. Sure, the EOS R5 pushes things further, but if you can’t get the photos you want with the R6, it is unlikely to be the camera’s fault.

Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6
Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras have the ability to capture the action of a variety of fast-moving subjects with impressive accuracy and speed. When using the mechanical shutter, each can shoot up to 12 fps and up to 20 fps when using the completely silent shutter. Both cameras are the first to be outfitted with Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II which utilizes up to approximately100 percent coverage of the AF area and EOS iTR AF X incorporating AF tracking algorithms using deep learning technology and enhanced readout speed of the CMOS sensor and processing speed thanks to the DIGIC X image processor. The 1,053 automatically selected AF Zones are made even more potent by the ability to detect the human eye, face or head as well as the eye, face or body of animals such as dogs, cats and even birds[i]. Adding to the feature set is the 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer, having coordinated control with Optical Image Stabilizer in IS equipped RF lenses. This provides up to 8 stops[ii] of shake correction, a feature that many creators have long asked for from Canon. Both the EOS R5 and R6 cameras come with a new LP-E6NH battery with a higher capacity than the previous model.
As the new flagship model in the EOS R series lineup, the EOS R5 camera has features that pack a punch for a variety of users who create both still and video content. It has a powerful 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and is driven by the speedy DIGIC X image processor, giving wide dynamic range as well as boasting an ISO range of 100-51,200 that is expandable up to 102,400[iii]. In a camera full of eye-popping features, one that really stands out is the ability to record uncropped 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps and 8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). The camera can also record 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). External recording in 4K is also available up to 59.94 fps. When in DCI modes, the 8K and 4K video recording is uncropped and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is available in all 8K and 4K recording modes. Additional features of the EOS R5 camera include:

The EOS R6 camera is well-equipped with a host of new features to push the limits of creativity for imaging enthusiasts. Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
The Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is a high-performance and versatile super-telephoto zoom lens that will find its way into the bags of many photographers. The compact and lightweight lens features optical image stabilization of up to five stops* of shake correction with three different IS modes, including standard, panning and during exposure only. Two Nano USM motors are at the heart of this lens and provide users with high-speed, smooth and quiet auto focus with a minimum focusing distance of three feet. Thanks for the Information… maybe Canon will push Nikon into producing a mirrorless that meets the needs of landscape and wildlife photographers. I have a Z6; it’s amazing for landscape work, but the slow focus makes it a difficult choice for wildlife use.
Does it have to be so ugly?
Glad to see they decided do ditch that silly control bar (or whatever was it called). I still wish Canon took a hint from Nikon, Panasonic and Sony and put the on/off switch on the shutter button but I guess aesthetics is more important (or “a Canon camera looking like a Canon” thing), I can’t really see any other reason not to implement such an obvious feature. Also sad to see the disappearance of a top screen but it really does look like the space is pretty cramped as it is.
And I wish they decided to develop an actual battery…250 shots with the EVF at 120 fps (I can’t imagine why anyone would want it lower than that – either than to save battery) is really a poor result.
It’s a interesting camera though, to be certain. Not one that interests me (I’d swap the mediocre DR and 20 mpx for, say, a 36mpx Sony sensor) but there’s a lot of potential. It’s a bit pricey, when all is said and done (over here it’ll probably sell for 3000€, not exactly peanuts) and given the current economy I don’t know how well it’ll sell but hey, finally some serious FF ML cameras from Canon, it’s been a long time coming. Hopefully it’ll make everyone else step up their game as well. Provided the whole industry doesn’t sink into bankrupcy within the year. Happy times indeed, full of unbridled optimism. Cheers!

That sensor isn’t ideal for dynamic range and high resolution needs, and for landscape photography it wouldn’t be my first choice. However, the 1DX III is quite good from a high ISO perspective, and for some photographers (wedding shooters in particular) a 20 megapixel camera could actually be a positive. Combined with silent 20 FPS shooting and face/eye tracking AF, that seems like the biggest target audience to me. Not to mention that Canon’s RF lens lineup is filling out well for portrait photographers.
I’m not a wedding photographer, but if I were, the R6 would be ticking almost all the boxes.
Any insight into the Dynamic Range? One of the main reasons I’ve stayed with Nikon for so long.

Yes, Canon has said the R5 has about one stop in dynamic range improvement over the EOS R. The R6 apparently does not have that benefit, as its sensor is based on that of the 1DX III. Of course, we’ll need to see actual tests to know for sure, in both cases!
