Introduction to Landscape Photography Presentation

On Thursday, June 26th I’ll be conducting an Introduction to Landscape Photography presentation at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery in Grimsby, Ontario. This session will be focused at the beginner/introductory level and will cover composition tips, understanding your gear and getting the most from it, along with some basics on using photo editing software to enhance landscape images, including a number of ‘before and after’ examples.

Thomas Stirr Landscape Photography (1)

NIKON D800 + 70-200mm f/4 @ 95mm, ISO 50, 13/1, f/11.0

The presentation is scheduled to run from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. It is being conducted as a fund-raiser for the Grimsby Public Art Gallery. The cost is $5 for members and $8 for non-members with all proceeds going to the Art Gallery.

If any Photography Life readers are within driving distance of Grimsby, I’d love to see you at the presentation. If you live in the Niagara peninsula, Hamilton or western end of the greater Toronto area, I’m hoping that I’ll see you at the session. Please remember that the content is focused at the beginner/introductory level.

To register you can call the Grimsby Public Art Gallery at 905.945.3246 or email

        Hey Tom,

It was great to meet you as well! Thank you for your time and your presentation. Your advice on composition was fantastic and is definitely something I’ll apply to my own practice in the future. I hope we can get together again soon to talk some more about the V2 and try it in action on those cormorants. I apologize again for having to leave during the middle of your presentation but trust me when I say I learned a lot tonight! Was the final piece of the presentation about Lightroom adjustments/presets?

          Hi Gavin,

Yes….the final section was about using software to enhance RAW files…although it was not Lightroom specific. I also had a number of ‘before and after’ examples.

If ever you do plan a trip to UK I am involved with some photo groups & am sure we could find some “work” for you.

          Hi Andrew,

My ‘pass the hat’ comment was in jest….but it certainly is great to know that there may be some interest to warrant a trip to the UK. My wife and I have been talking about a possible trip to Ireland, likely in 2016.

I was going to make the same joke about Grimbsy, England. Only about a 7 hour drive for me from where I am in Scotland.

Hey Thomas, ever get over to Scotland, I shall introduce you to our miserable weather (which has actually been very good for here, the past week)

Hmmm…..some hasn’t purposely introduced me to something miserable in quite some time…..!

I am sure there would be a big welcome in Ireland for you, photography is very strong over there. If you get the chance have a look at a website for Giles Norman, Co. Cork, some excellent monochrome work but landsccape that would work in any medium.

            Hi Andrew,

Thanks very much for the tip….I’ll have a look at Giles Norman’s work. I think there is quite a good possibility that a trip to Ireland in 2016 is in the making…it certainly would be wonderful to meet Photography Life readers during a visit.

Nice landscape photos Thomas. Have you thought of videoing your presentation and making it available to the Photography Life community. Texas to Ontario is just not going to happen. :)

      Hi Robert,

I have all kinds of plans….but it seems not enough time in the day to do them all!

One of the thing I hate about the thing is putting watermark in the middle of the image. I am not sure why are you afraid of copyright so much. I see other guest posts where they dont put any watermarks except YOU! sorry for being rude but it hurts overall image.

    Hi Mack,

It’s just my nature to be protective of my work. Even with my watermarks on them my shots from articles at Photography Life are all over the web. Without watermarks I have no idea what people would be doing with them. Sorry if the watermarks detract from your viewing enjoyment…for me its just being prudent in the digital age.

    Hi Tom,

I wish there was a way for us “too far” enthusiasts to join via the web. Maybe someone out there knows how this could be done with very little expense…………….Sorry that I won’t be able to attend.
