Free Photography Workshops with The Mansurovs

I am putting together a schedule of workshops that Lola and I will be organizing during the next few months. Many of our readers have been asking whether we conduct workshops or not and we are excited to announce that we will be hosting a number of free photography workshops in Colorado this year. Why free? Because first, this is what our website is all about – to give free knowledge to our readers, and second, both Lola and I love sharing our knowledge and helping out struggling photographers.

The workshops will be divided by categories (landscape, portraiture, etc) and levels (beginner to advanced), so we will go through a lot of content. In addition to outdoor photography workshops, the plan is to also host some post-processing workshops, but it will depend on whether we can find free conference space or not.

Here is the list of workshops we will conduct:

  1. Introduction to Photography Workshop – for those, who recently bought a DSLR camera and want to learn the basics of photography (exposure triangle, equipment, etc).
  2. Landscape Photography Workshop – specifically designed for landscape photographers. We will be shooting on location, most likely in Rocky Mountain National Park or Great Sand Dunes National Park.
  3. Portrait and Wedding Photography Workshop – for portrait and wedding photographers. We will try to get models for this workshop and we will be shooting outside in a local park in Denver area.
  4. Flash Photography Workshop – for those, who want to learn how to use small strobes. We will go over the basics of flash photography and how to use flash in TTL and manual modes.

The dates we have open for now are: May 28-29, June 11-12, June 18-19 (subject to change).

What I need to know at the moment, is how many people are actually interested in attending which workshops. Below you will find a poll with the above list. Please pick one and vote, then leave a comment below with some specifics on what you are interested in learning.

Workshop(s) you are interested in

  • Portrait and Wedding Photography (65%, 63 Votes)
  • Landscape Photography (57%, 55 Votes)
  • Flash Photography (51%, 49 Votes)
  • Introduction to Photography (33%, 32 Votes)

Total Voters: 97

NOTE: There are no plans at the moment to conduct workshops in other states, so you will have to travel to Denver area for workshops if you are in a different state/country.

This sounds like a great idea! Would you be able to post videos of the classes for those of us who do not live in Colorado? Thanks

    • May 10, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Heidi, that might be difficult to do, since we do not have any videographers :(

      • May 12, 2011 at 11:13 am

A simple webcam and laptop could do the trick for at-least a decent video we can watch on youtube :)

Hi! Suzy Barlow is my mother-in-law and she shared your blog with me. I am absolutely interested in the introductory workshop (and maybe more). I just got my first SLR last week, and I am looking for any opportunity to learn! My husband and I have just arrived in Colorado and will be moving to Fort Carson on June 1. I would love the opportunity to learn from you!

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Jeanette, thanks for visiting our blog and please send our warmest regards to Suzy!

Please subscribe to our feed or come back later to see the full schedule (we are still working on it).

What a gift. I’m a little closer to Colorado than most here, but still a little out of reach for me. Wish I could attend, but can’t. I think a online course would be an excellent idea. Love your blog.

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Scott, no worries – I am thinking about hosting a skype/video session soon.

aw..that is so sweet of you the both of you..if that would have been other photographer, they would probably have charged some big mocko bucks…thank you but since i am not from your area, i will just cross my fingers that you’d have a video/webinar or similar idea…:)

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Noreen, we will see if we can come up with something…we might host video/web sessions separately later.

How generous and worthwhile. Your articles always present info in easy to understand way. Surely, your workshops will be great. Love to work with a true Nikon professional. I’d plan to travel from FL for both weekend in June, especially if different workshops were offered. Surely, I could find wonderful opportunities in-between. Simply love Estes Park. Thanks for the consideration.

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Phoenix, great if you can come all the way from FL! We are going to Florida (Orlando) this weekend and will spend around 10 days there, mainly for vacation and to see Mickey. Let me know if you are in the Orlando area, we might hook up there!

        May 12, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Nasim, would love to hook up with you. Any chance that you’ll come south to the Delray area. There are some wonderful nature and refuge sites if you like to photograph birds. And, of course, further south is the one and only Everglades. Definitley a different environment from Denver.

    Like always, great initiative.
Many people with kids may find late June and July a better time period to travel. Just my two cents, I don’t have any school attending kids yet :).
That said, I would definitely try to attend 2 of these if they are on back to back weekends.
    Thanks a lot.
    Best wishes,

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Daya, yes, the idea is to have two workshops on a weekend. I have not finalized the schedule yet, but we will try to push it back to mid summer…

    Nasim & Lola,
I and my wife really appreciate for your knowledge sharing. After visiting some studio in Las Vegas, we then crazy about panoramic landscape photos. We decided to buy first DSLR: D 7000 even we are zero in photography b/c we could not afford those pictures. Of course, we don’t expect to take a photo amazing like that but at least it’s our picture. So we need to learn a lot how to use this gear. We surfed many websites especially well-known photographers. Most of them gave us nothing just only selling the pictures. But when we are here we get what we want to know. And now we see your generosity again you will run workshop “FOR FREE”. Even we can not attend the class, but we would like to tell you both briefly: Nasim & Lola, we can not tell you who is the best photographer on this earth, but we can tell you your hearts are bigger.

Thanks a lot again for everythig you have done for people.

    Chin & Tong

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Chin, thank you so much for your feedback! Who knows, maybe in the future we will organize webinars or video record our workshops as well :)

I am at a loss. I need lighting for small – medium size product photography in the studio & some location work. I’m looking at two softboxes encinchome 500w which are very expensive that include stand & internal master/receiver units. But the alternative is couple small flash which cost about the same….after boxes, stands, etc. Just at a Loss :<

    • May 12, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Vicki, if you need flash for studio work and other indoors photography, go for the Elinchrom flashes. If you need to be mobile, I would recommend the Elinchrom RX set (that’s what we use). If you need to stay light, then strobes are the way to go…

I am a frequent visitor of this website and I would really like to attend in one of your workshops, unfortunately beign far away makes it impossbile to do that.

I hope you’ll do a video or some sort just to help anyone that could not attend.

    Thanks again.

I am stumped for words… both of you are generous … with your knowledge.
I’ve learned heaps about what my camera, about post processing and many more from reading through your articles, and now I keeping my fingers cross for that webinar…
    Thank you very very much…

I need a hyper-telephoto lens with a focal length of 50000000mm to view and record your workshops , because Denver’s pretty far from India ! All the best for the workshops, I’m sure they’ll be a roaring success. I’ve not heard of professional photographers host free photography workshops, if at all they do. Your philosophy is akin to FOSS software , kudos !

This is absolutely wonderful! Is there any chance you might have these workshops in the fall? I do live a bit far away (Wisconsin) and would need to make travel arrangement far in advance (I’ll be out of the country for your May session and it’s too early for me to take off work in June for the June workshops). I too hope there will be some sort of a video (or more of your wonderful tutorials with examples). And I’d absolutely vote “yes” for a post-processing workshop (LightRoom, right?)

This is a great idea! I’ve really been wanting to attend a workshop to improve on my portraits and learn flash photography, but since I’m not making any money off of my photography right now, that’s a little hard to do. I’m in West Texas, so flying or driving wouldn’t be too bad.

    • May 16, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Amanda, sounds good! The drive through Colorado’s south west (San Juan Mountains) is absolutely beautiful in the summer. I would recommend to take that road, even if it slows you down!

  22. May 17, 2011 at 4:36 pm

That is a generous gift. Thank you for the offer.

If and when I would love to attend the landscape seminar and if I can help out with anything please let me know.

    Hi Nasim,
I have come across your web site only 3 days ago when I was searching for articles in Google on Nikon D7000 (that I have) and possible combination of best lenses to pair with my 18-200 VR II lens. I am am hobbyist and learning by experimenting and reading articles by experts on the web such as by you.

I must say that I am most humbled by the contents on your web site and I have been waking up early this weekend to go through various articles. “The more I read, the more I realize how little I know”! I want to Thank You and Lola for offering such a great service to so many enthusiats like me out there.

I would be very interested in attending your free workshop. If you please keep me posted on when/where it would be held, I will greatly appreciate it. I live in Phoenix, AZ so would need to plan in advance so I can learn so much from you and others. We had a family trip to Colorado last summer (Durango, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride) and I am in total of awe by the beauty of your wonderful state. Your workshop would be another reason to come there again!

If you ever host a workshop (even with charge) in Pheonix, AZ, please let me know and I would be happy to attend that as well.

Once again, thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with us in a simple understandble language. Your web site is as beautiful as your photography – nice, clean and beautifully organized.

    Hi Nasim,
I am confused. Is updated workshop schedule for 2012? My understanding is Portrait and Wedding Photography and Landscape Photography workshops are on June 12 2012 and 13, 2012, respectively. Am I correct? Since I am planning this trip from Minnesota strictly to attend your workshops, I would appreciate hearing from you. If these dates pertained to the trips in 2011, then what is the scedule for workshops in 2012? Thank you.

    Nasim & Lola,

Will you be hosting any Workshops in 2013 for beginner photographers? I recently purchased my first DSLR and have been reading about photography for several months now. I am very excited to put my new camera to use! I have been looking for workshops for beginners all over Colorado and came across your website.

    Thank you for your time.
