I see that this is the only brand forum with no posts yet, so I'll wade in and start one - for Sony users to drop in and introduce themselves, and if they wish, share their gear and general comments.
I'm an amateur/hobbyist shooter, who migrated from using Nikon gear to Sony. With a Panasonic FZ1000 and a Fuji X100V along the way. The bottom line of course, is that the cameras and other gear are tools. But sometimes I get too wrapped up in the gear details and have to be brought back to that bottom line.
My gateway to Sony was a NEX-6. Somehow I got convinced that it wasn't a "serious" enough camera, so sold the Sony stuff to stick with my Nikon DSLRs. Later, I bought an a6000, and the rest is history. For awhile I shot with both Nikon and Sony, but as a hobbyist that was just too complicated. Two sets of batteries, chargers, lenses, and more. Nope! However, the only camera I've ever regretted selling besides the NEX-6, was the Nikon D750, so it wasn't an easy decision.
For all I know, I'd really enjoy using Canon gear or the Fuji ILCs, but I'm on the Sony path and I'm fine with it.
Here's my current Sony lineup - and yes, I am very oversupplied with gear! In mitigation, I bought many of these items used.
Full frame:
- A7R3 body.
- Sony FF prime lenses: 35mm f2.8; 28mm f2; 55mm f1.8.
- Tamron FF lenses: 17-28mm f2.8; 28-200mm; 70-180mm f2.8; 70-300mm.
APS-C:
- a6600 body.
- a6000 body - converted to 720nm infrared.
- a5100 body. Old and small and IMO it punches above its weight.
- Sony APS-C lenses: 20mm f2.8; 16-50 mm (the infamous kit lens and I like it).
- Sigma APS-C lens: 18-50mm f2.8 (if this lens was human I'd marry it).
- Tamron APS-C lenses: 11-20mm f2.8; 18-300mm (the a6600 + the 18-300 is my go-to combo).
Cybershot:
- RX100 iii. I didn't love it as much as I thought I would, but can't bring myself to part with it. Go figure.
- RX100 vii. Recent purchase. I'm old. Carrying even moderately heavy camera gear results in aches when I've carried it all day. This camera and the RX1R2 are my go-to travel kit - although I might pack the a6600 + 18-300mm too.
- RX1R2: I wanted this for a long time. Last year I bought a used one from B&H. I do not regret the cost at all.
TBH, my full frame gear has been under-used over the last year. I can't bring myself to sell it off yet because the A7R3 sensor is so good. But I'm usually shooting in decent light and the a6600 is more than up to that.
And just for fun, here in the Sony forum - I have to admit that this morning I've been revisiting and processing photos that I took in Thailand in 2009. I took them with my first ever DSLR, a Nikon D40x, and its kit lenses. I was shooting Auto but I knew just enough to shoot RAW. The processing session has brought back good memories of that trip, and has revealed some better images than I realized I'd grabbed.
Oops. I made a mistake in my first post:
I don't own an a5100. It's a NEX-5R that I bought cheap last year and enjoy playing with. I like its small form factor with the 20mm f2.8 lens attached, and I don't worry much about pulling it out and shooting on the streets. It's usually stashed in my car in case I want to take a photo with something other than my phone and I'm not carrying another camera.
I still owned the NEX-6 in March 2014, when I took it on a road trip to San Antonio. Today I processed photos I shot on that trip. I can't complain about the camera's performance - or that of the 16-50mm kit lens. A few of those images:
Hi, I'm new to this forum. I've been with Sony since 2017 when I purchased my alpha 6000. After leaving it home during my anniversary vacation, I convinced my wife to let me buy the 7II. I really love that camera. IMO, people sleep on Sony but having shot Nikon and Pentax, Sony cameras are the best.
Welcome @odabo! We're a few weeks away from testing our first Sony lenses in the lab at Photography Life - it's been a long time coming. I've used Sony cameras in the field many times already and always liked them, even though as a Nikon user, I might be labelled a heretic for saying so :)

From this point of view You are a lucky man !
@spencer First off, I will certainly not label you as a heretic. Nikon, Cannon, Sony and many others make fine equipment. I moved to Sony when I determined Mirrorless cameras were ready for prime time. Certainly keep us posted on the results of the lens testing. Obiviously, the G-Master lineup is Sony's gold standard but the price places them out of reach for most amatuers and not well established professionals. I just started my Photography business, so it will be a while before I can afford those lenses.
