It is a good documentary photo ! But with 500mm and Dx,image area, You would have had a chance for a good portrait( You should have changed your position a little, to avoid the shadow of the ear, of course, if You had time )

Thanks, good point. However if you look at the scene closly you will see the rhino is essentially back lit from high, the shadow from the ears will always fall forward.
The only options would be wait for it to move, the light to move or shoot it from the back. If it was a leopard I might wait but I see lots of rhino on my first day so not worth spending hours. Even straight on or side on the shadow is falling forward.
