The Purple Sandpiper is named after the - admittedly very faint - purplish glow it shows on the wings and back in winter plumage. It's rarely visible in the field or on photos, but you can make it out on the below shot, where the sunlight hits the feathers just at the right angle.

Town Crier wearing royal purple outside Windsor Castle. The crown decoration hanging above the street is royal purple as well.
