@wiseowl I totally blew a great shot of a Pileated Woodpecker this morning. By the time I got done farting around with the camera, he was gone.
I went with the great idea that I was going to try Canon's new pixel shift thing on some mosses....and it was gonna be cool....except that it wasn't.
I tried to get some shots of fiddleheads. I didn't like any of them.
But the dog and I had a nice walk. 😉
Great topic. My initial response was that I need to slow down. Thinking more about it though, perhaps my weakness is that I don’t recognize potential in what I’m seeing so I just move on too quickly. I need to see more or look better. If that makes any sense.
Either way, the more I go out to take pictures the more I realize that photography is hard and takes a lot of study and practice to get better.

But that's a good thing. I mean, what if you'd take the perfect picture everytime, eventually you wouldn't know it because they are all the same. There would no longer be a comparison, you won't notice any progress in your effort etc. Hm, don't think that would make a good hobby :)

It's reassuring to see "slow down" turn up in several responses. This lets me know I'm not the only one who gets kind of stupid when the red mist descends... 😉
Sometimes, for me the frustration comes from seeing ....something... but not knowing exactly what. Because I can't figure out what it is that caught my eye, I don't know what to do to maximize that and minimize the distractions. Sometimes playing around with cropping after the fact helps, sometimes not. Sometimes, I still don't know. Case in point:
I walked by these trees and something caught my eye, but I wasn't sure what. I walked around and looked at it from a bunch of different angles, but wasn't sure why it caught my eye. I took a bunch of shots and played with them when I got home. This is as close as I came....and I'm still ambivalent about it. <Shrug>
And no, photography is not hard and every shot is a winner - or at least that's what Youtube would have us believe.... 😉
In the past I had been taking photos of almost everything. Since I am retired I take photos I feel.
