(not sure if it fits Open Talk or that it seems a bit too much like a self-promoting post, so @admins feel free to delete if necessary)
Recently I have opened an account on Substack and really found a lot of great photography related content there. Not the typical tips, tricks or top-mistakes-photographer-make type of content, more personal writings of photographers explaining their way, their vision and reasoning behind their work.
Substack is basically a 'newsletter' system where you can send out e-mail newsletters, but these also end up on the Substack website. As long as it is free content (creators can set up paid subscriptions), it'll end up there as well (so often technically you don't need to sign up for a newsletter).
Anyway, a few photographers that I think are awesome at what they do on Substack:
https://wesley.substack.com
https://dobkinphoto.substack.com
https://lionelsmint.substack.com
https://jasonhunter.substack.com/
https://marcelborgstijn.substack.com/
And finally my shameless self-promotion: https://ronaldsmeets.substack.com ;)
Anyone here who's using Substack or follows photographers on Substack?
I joined Ronald's substack and it looks very promising so far!
@jpolakphotography thank you again Jason for the support :)
I must say so far I like the way Substack 'works'. It's easy to start writing (short) articles / assays / whatever you want about whatever subject (photography / my photos in my case) and a neat way to show it to the world. Without having to play the (ad/algorithm) game of the company behind it.
I think it complements my personal photography website quite well (where I simply show photos, without much additional text).
Todat I have published my second issue: https://ronaldsmeets.substack.com/p/retroreflection-issue-2
Nice, Ronald! I was exploring creating a substack myself. I think it's a cool alternative to the YouTube style and seems a bit more sane with less clickbait and feed-based entertainment.
Exactly!
Currenty I think Substack is still a bit "underground", but I have always like those kinds of things in everything (where everyone goes left, I tend to go right ;-)). I hope the owners will keep that in mind should Substack grow (a lot), but only the future will tell. So far I noticed a lot of people fed up with Instagram (Meta), end up at Substack.
If you ever start writing/showing your images on Substack let us know 👍
