So I tidied up a IKEA Ivar cabinet and now that's my place. There's enough space for the tripods, I can easily pick up my lenses and I have furthermore storage options for small boxes with all the other tiny gear pieces. For me it works comfortable.
IKEA Billy (80 cm width) here. No doors, glass or otherwise.
About two open shelves in use with bodies, flash-unit, slide projector & lenses, with room to spare.
Stuff gets cleaned before used.
Additionally one plastic hold-all box/container appr. 30 liters on top of mentioned Billy for smaller, less used stuff like filters, leftover bodystraps, mini tripods, etc. etc..
The big tripod & monopod should be somewhere on the attic. Even after almost 20 years that still seems to be the goto place for stuff 'lost' while moving :-)
Before I had a studio, I just kept everything in Peli's in the basement (didn't have a garage). Kept big silica packs in the cases and never had a problem with humidity.
Now I don't keep any equipment at home. It's all locked up in the studio in the city, labeled, on racks, in their own respective cases so assistants can read and see from a glance where equipment is, and what it is.
Opposite of those racks is my workbench where I clean, fix, build, test, charge etc.. It's pretty dialed in I like it alot. It's set up like a miniature rental house.
I've got a nightstand that I've dedicated to my camera and lenses. Backpacks go behind the couch. Tripod underneath the bed.
I'm starting to outgrow this setup though and am observing this thread with interest.
Living in Singapore, with it's constant high humidity, I use a dry cabinet. 160 litre capacity, which means 7 shelves of 40x40cm, and that can hold all my wife's and my equipment: 6 bodies and 13 lenses, plus adapters, lens hoods, teleconverters etc. Very easy to access and not too bad looking. From a distance it's almost like a tall wine fridge :)
@chicago thank you for sharing! I am planning to buy two pelican cases and will follow your advice re dividers.
@vento Thank you for sharing! I love that cabinet and will follow your advice on how to organize gear and keep the humidity under control.
