Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me with my question. Is the image qu ality noticeably less in DX mode (Nikon 7ll) or am I better off with a crop camera? I can buy a used Nikon prime 300mm f4D AF-S D for a very interesting price from a reliable source and I would like to combine it with the Nikon Z7ll which has IBIS, because the lens does not have VR and to have a range of 450mm in DX mode. I would then perhaps consider a telephoto lens later for even more range. Thanks in advance for your answer. Greetings, Danny
The pixel densities of Nikon APS-C are almost exactly the same as that of the Z7 II, so in crop mode, the difference in terms of pixels on your subject would be the difference between a 300mm lens and a 309mm lens – not significant.
With the lens you're thinking about, having IBIS would be superior, I'd say.
@jpolakphotography : Thank you very much for your clear answer Jason.
Hi Danny! The image quality in DX mode on the Nikon Z7II is still excellent, thanks to its high-resolution sensor, but you will lose some resolution (from 45MP down to about 19MP). If your primary goal is reach and you're not printing very large, the DX crop mode works well and pairs nicely with that 300mm f/4D for a 450mm equivalent field of view. A dedicated crop-sensor camera like the Z50 or Zfc would give you the same reach natively but with lower overall image quality and dynamic range compared to the Z7II. Since you already have the Z7II with IBIS, using DX mode is a practical and cost-effective solution for now. You can always invest in a longer Z-mount telephoto later when you're ready to upgrade.
