Oh dear... Do you want to start a tribal war in here? :-)

I'll condense the possible answers into one line of two words:

It depends.

And even on a lot of factors. Some important ones being:

- your intended purpose (sports? street? candid? wedding? nature? portrait? news? etc...)

- your budget (what is 'affordable' for you, might be 'horrendously expensive' for me and pricing might even be (somewhat) location dependent)

- your 'happiness' with the 'user interface' (button layout, info on lcd screens, etc.) of a brand (although that usually comes after some initial experience)

And I am certain I forgot some other factors that other people might find very important.
