Will Nikon's acquisition lead to stronger mirrorless hybrid cameras from Nikon (as good at video as they are for photos)? Perhaps even video-oriented mirrorless cameras to compete with the likes of the FX30 or FX3?
I can't wait to see, I hope so! It seems to be a great resource that they would be crazy not to use in their mirrorless cameras. Although they'll surely keep the RED branding for the pro cinema cameras. My big question is lenses - are they going to start making Nikon-brand cine lenses?
I don't expect to see much connection with the Z30 other than it serving and the entry level product for content creators. The Red lineup starts above the price of a Z9 and goes much higher.
Red was the cinema darling 10 years ago, but more recently growth has slowed. There are increasing numbers of cameras that can shoot high quality video with better auto focus. But Red does have a reputation for innovative technology and high quality products and is a good fit ofr Nikon. It immediately makes Nikon a major player.
The big opportunity short term is to add the Nikon mount to the Red camera. That would open up use of a lot of Nikon Z lenses as well as F-mount lenses. It's uncertain how long the Canon RF mount will be supported as that is relatively new and a competitor. But Red has support for a number of mounts so it could continue.
There are technologies that can benefit both ways. Nikon has VR, AF subject recognition, other AF technologies, Auto Capture, and more. Red has a global shutter and some advanced sensor technologies that could be interesting. They also have 8k and Raw video compression which was the subject of settled litigation with Nikon.
I expect it will take 12-24 months to see any product impact from the merger. Nikon's upcoming cameras are already under way, but it might be possible to get the Nikon mount on the Red cameras as an option.

+1 ericbowles. 12-24 months is about the earliest you would see any product impact. Longer if it requires a silicon design/verification cycle and isn't adapting something that already exists.
