So I'm in the market for a nifty fifty lens and while looking through Amazon, I found a Nikon lens for around $200. But after a bit of searching I found an off-brand lens that claims to be compatible with Nikon for almost $100 less. Ngl I'm tempted to buy it but wanted to ask what you guys think about off-brand lenses. Is quality much of a difference? Does it even matter? Is it alright for beginners like myself to buy off-brand lenses? Or should I save up to buy the lenses from a reputable brand like Nikon?
There is hardly a general rule about this question. Most of the time it's better to wait, save and take the camera branded lens, but there are many exceptions, including variations between sales channel.
Maybe you should be more specific about the models and resellers in order to help some here to be able to give the most relevant advice.
@prg-lagarde Yeah makes sense. Btw this is the one I saw. The nikon 50mm lens is double the price.
Then again, Amazon might not even be a good place to buy photography equipment.
In that case, I'd take the Nikon... and probably wait even more to buy the 1.4 (but it's me).
Yeah that's what I'm thinking about doing as well. Thanks!
@geniuspelican Plus there are some chances that you can find the 1.4 in a good shape second hand for a decent price.
