I'm a complete beginner with a strong interest in photography, and I'm finally ready to buy my first camera and start learning! However, with all the different cameras and specs out there, I'm completely overwhelmed and don't know where to begin.
I have limited knowledge, but I do know about DSLR, mirrorless, and compact cameras. I'm just not sure which type would be best for me. My budget is around $800
Besides the camera body and lens, what other essential accessories should I buy? Memory cards, camera bags, extra batteries, any recommendations?
When buying a camera, are there any important things to look out for? How can I avoid making a mistake and purchasing something I might regret?
I'd really appreciate any advice you experienced photographers can offer! Thank you all in advance!
Hi Fan,
First of all, welcome! That is exciting that you are discovering a passion for photography.
Regarding your first camera, there are tons of different options. In addition to budget, which you mentioned, the other big variable is what type of photography you are most interested in. For example, if you are interested in landscapes, you might want to find a camera with good resolution and a sturdy tripod, along with a medium wide to medium long lens to capture a variety of scenes. On the other hand, if you want to photograph sports, speed will be a more important variable (a longer lens, good autofocus, etc).
If you give us a little more information about what you are most wanting to photograph, we could provide some more specific recommendations. In general though, I'd suggest at a minimum: get a camera with interchangeable lenses (instead of a camera with a single, attached lens), get a lens that covers a decent "normal" focal range, and then get an extra memory card and battery for whatever camera you get.
Happy shooting!

EXCELLENT for the novice shutterbug.
Moderator, I'm new here. Can I mention where I bought mine?
