Summary and Recommendations
The Nikon Zf is ahead of the Z5 in almost every way. Although the Z5’s autofocus has been improved a bit since its release with firmware updates, the Zf is still far ahead. That being said, for slower-paced photography, the Z5 does work very well.
The Zf has much better video than the Z5. This will be especially noticeable at 4K30, where the Z5 has the significant crop of 1.7, although 1080P quality is comparable. The Zf also has got 10-bit video out of the box so you’ll have more flexibility with it in post.
The one thing going for the Z5 is its price. You can certainly get the Z5 for at least half the price of the Zf, if not more. So if you don’t need the more advanced autofocus for moving subjects, the Z5 could be a really nice camera.
What does the Nikon Z5 offer over the Nikon Zf?
- Lighter weight (35g lighter. It’s not a lot, but every bit helps.)
- Lower price, costing $600 less
What does the Nikon Zf offer over the Nikon Z5?
- Much better autofocus
- Higher resolution rear display, with about 2.0x more dots, making image review in the field easier
