The Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S has been one of the most highly anticipated Nikon mirrorless lenses yet – but it almost didn’t exist. In early versions of the Nikon Z roadmap, a 24-105mm was shown instead. Thankfully, Nikon scrapped that plan and eventually went with the 24-120mm design we have today.

Our Lens Testing Survey Results
Last week, I posted a survey asking what lens reviews you most wanted to see at Photography Life. The survey received many more responses than I expected: 657 before I closed it! I’ve tallied up the responses and now have a clear idea what lenses we’re going to review next.
Photography News: Nikon 35mm f/1.2 Rumor, SanDisk Sale
It’s fall color season right now in Colorado! Just going outside is enough to make me feel refreshed and relaxed. It’s a slower time of year for photography news, but a few interesting things still happened this week. When I’ve had time away from the aspens, here’s what I’ve found for you.
Our Lens Tests Are Back! What Should We Review First?
The title says it all – our new lens testing studio is operational! There’s a long list of lenses in front of me to review, and only so many days in a year. So, I’d love to hear what you want to see us review first at Photography Life.
Photography News: New Mirrorless Lenses, Big Canon Sale
There are some subjects that I could keep photographing forever and never feel bored. My favorite might be the abstract patterns of sand dunes – small in size compared to a grand landscape, but no less striking. To me, finding hidden compositions in the desert is like searching for buried treasure.

When I started out in photography, I found myself frustrated with the kit lenses for my Nikon D5100 DSLR. I kept getting blurry pictures with both lenses, especially the 55-300mm DX telephoto. At the time, I desperately felt that I needed to upgrade the lens or else be doomed to take blurry photos forever.
Photography News: Laowa 2x Macro Lens Announced, MacBook Pro Sale
For the next couple of weeks, I’ll be writing our weekly news in place of Libor as he travels to – you guessed it! – South America. I understand that he has some of the backordered Nikon Z telephotos with him, so keep an eye out for reports on those lenses when he returns. Now for the news!
The Two People in Every Photo, According to Ansel Adams
One of my favorite photography quotes is Ansel Adams’s observation, “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” I find that very poignant. Here’s the longer quote to show a bit of context:
Nikon Z Lens Roadmap (Updated December 2024)
Nikon just made an exciting and unexpected update to their mirrorless lens roadmap! There are a few new lenses now that we didn’t know about before, with a 35mm S prime, a 135mm S prime, and a 70-180mm non-S zoom.
Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 Announced – And Nikon’s Strategy Grows Clearer
A second rebranded Tamron lens is coming to the Nikon Z system – this time, an ultra-wide. When the rumors started last week, some photographers hoped that DX would see a bit of love with an adapted Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8, but instead, the lens announced today is the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8.
