I'm filling in for Libor for this week's Photography News while he travels in South America in search of wildlife. He's sent me some behind-the-scenes photos already, and let me say, you're in for a treat once he returns. For now, I hope you're enjoying atmospheric sunrises and good light...

From Idea to Print: The Darkroom Process
Last week, I talked about the process of visualizing and composing with large format film during my trip to Yosemite in the fall. I’ve been working in the darkroom to print those photos, and today I finally have some results to publish and discuss!
Sigma Joins the Nikon Z System with Three DX Lenses
Sigma just announced that three of their existing APS-C lenses – the 16mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.4 – are launching for the Nikon Z system later this year! I’ve been a fan of Sigma lenses for years, and it’s exciting to see them finally add some Z mount options.
From Idea to Print: 12×20 Film in the Field
It’s a snowy day here in Colorado, which puts a damper on my plans to visit our studio and test more lenses in the lab. (I do, however, have the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 and both teleconverters in hand for testing once the roads clear.) Instead, I’ve spent the day developing film.
Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 Review
This is an in-depth review of the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8, which was announced in September of 2022. Although the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is a wide-aperture zoom with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8, it is not part of Nikon's high-end "S-line," and the MSRP of $1200 is less...
Canon EOS R8 Announcement: 30 FPS Pre-Release RAW Burst, $1500
Canon just announced a new addition to their full-frame mirrorless lineup with the EOS R8, a mid-range camera with some nonetheless impressive features and specifications. At the heart of the camera is a 24 megapixel sensor with up to 40 FPS bursts, or 30 FPS when shooting RAW pre-release bursts.
Canon EOS R50 Announcement: Entry-Level But Solid Features
Today, Canon announced their first entry-level camera for the EOS R system, the Canon EOS R50. With a 24 megapixel APS-C sensor, a fully articulating LCD, 15 FPS shooting, and 4K 30p video, the EOS R50 strikes a solid balance for $679 ($799 with the kit lens) despite the camera’s basic design.
Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.2 S Formally Announced
As expected from last month’s development announcement, Nikon has now formally announced the Z 26mm f/2.8 and the Z 85mm f/1.2 S lenses for their mirrorless Z system. The 26mm f/2.8 will sell for $499, and the 85mm f/1.2 for $2799. They ship in early and late March, respectively.
Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 PF VR S Review
When Nikon added an 800mm S-line prime lens to their roadmap, I had flashbacks to the F-mount 800mm f/5.6E FL. That lens was Nikon’s crown jewel for years – a $16,300 piece of glass that very few photographers could justify. Would the mirrorless version, the 800mm f/6.3 that I’m reviewing today, be any different?
Some Notes on AI, ChatGPT, and the Photography World
One of my favorite expressions is a “sea change” moment. Even Merriam-Webster’s entry for sea change is highly evocative: “Archaic. A change brought about by the sea.” You can imagine a time in the past when the ocean represented the ultimate unknown. To watch the sea, of all things, change, would be grand and terrifying.
