Just a small query on the deals section : Would you consider the Pentax K-01 at its current low price of $330 as a good deal ? For beginners (like yours truly) it could be a great starter kit to photography!

    Regards,
    Vishnu

    • Sure, that sounds like a good deal – Pentax cameras are always a great bargain!

    • PAT, what do you mean by “weakness on the SB-910″? It is the best Nikon flash produced to date…

Hello, just bought the Nikon D5100 + 18-55 mm lens for $440 including taxes from Staples last night. I think it is a great deal but want to see what others think of it. I am very new to DSLR, first DSLR that is….

I received a D5100 with the 18-55mm last Christmas. It has re-ignited my interest after a couple of decades of staring at the back of a point-and-shoot. I love the unit and have added a 50-300mm, 35mm 1.8 prime, a set of Kenko macro extension tubes, polarizing filter, and a SB-700 flash. Considering my constant “case of the gotta-haves” you got a good deal and will have fun with it. I am relearning photography from my days with a Mamiya Sekor 1000DTL. You will enjoy it!

To the original poster, add a nikon 10-24 mm DX lens first, then maybe 70-300 and u have a machine that can do it all. I was lucky enough to do that with a D90 then upped the body to a D7000. I miss the ease andportability of my DX now that i went to D800 and all new glass

I have been shooting with a Pentax ME for the past four years and am interested in a serious upgrade. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for a compact DSLR under $1000? Right now my main choice is the fujifilm x20.

I am looking at the Nikon D3000 with lenses :NIKKOR 55-200mm zoom lens and 18-55mm zoom lens
Glass Lens included. Would this work for taking sports photography shots? I noticed that your reviews don’t include this camera, but I wanted some insight into it if you have any. Thank you for any help you can offer.

I’ve really enjoyed reading all the tips and explanations you guys give here. I seriously need the clear way that you explain things, particularly, ISO, aperture, shutter speeds. Just by going thru the little excercises, I’m learning the settings on my camera. It’s just a point & shoot, but for someone who had no idea what goes into getting really nice photos, all the different settings even on my camera, is scary. Wondering if I’ll ever fully understand it all at this point! I just bought a Lumix dmc-zs7 which has settings to do amazing things but unfortunately, it’ll take lots of time and practice just to get comfortable with it. Glad I found this site and all your contributions!

First of all thanks for all the information. I have a minimally used D700 – is upgrading to the D800 a no brainer? Also is there a budding photographer that would want the D700 – I hate selling stuff and this would be a gift that I could send to you directly for you to distribute to whomever. Let me know.

    • John, you are most welcome! If you are a landscape, fashion, architecture and portrait photographer, then the D800 is a no-brainer. If you shoot wildlife and sports, then you might want to see if the 4-6 fps speed is going to be adequate for your needs.

As for your D700, we can always find home for it – we can either give it away in a contest or we can find someone that truly needs it through charity.

    Hi Nasim, John
I am part of a small volunteer run project that aims to revive drought affected villages in rural India. As you know, drought is a severe blight on villages in tropical countries. Many people die of hunger as crops fail and the water systems dry up. We would like to document the rehabilitation of these villages and exhibit the pics to gather funds from UN and other international organization. We would like to have the chance to obtain the D700 if both you and John are ok with it. We have a scraped together some funds for a small P & S but I am afraid that may not be enough to document this project. Please let me know what you think about this.

    • Raghuram, I never received a response back from John, but even if he did, shipping the camera to India would probably be a burden – not just because of the shipping costs, but also because of possible tax/VAT implications. I recently had to deal with a similar situation and it was quite problematic. Unless you can cover the costs and take care of the customs yourself…

Oh, forgot to mention – am learning a lot from reading your articles! I am a beginner and your articles are too good. Thank you.

    • Thank you for your feedback and good luck with your project. If I hear back from John, I will post it here and we’ll see if we can work something out…

    Hello Nasim,

Thanks for your inputs. You are right about shipping to India. There are some difficulties indeed. However, , an easier workaround is to ship it locally to my friend in the New Jersey area. He can bring it to India on his annual visits, around June-July time! Thanks a ton Nasim for following up with John. I hope we hear from him soon. Cheers and keep up the good work. It is refreshing to read stuff from people who go out and shoot for a change! :)

Nasim, thanks for all the articles and tips you post on your website. They are really informative. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts on either the Sigma 150mm 2.8 macro or the 180mm largely for doing butterflies, insects etc. I have a 100mm tokina but that is too short for this kind of stuff. Thanks!
