Just wanted to let our readers know that I will be covering the Canon 5D Mark III release, similar to how I covered the Nikon D800 launch. So far I have only been covering Nikon and Sony products (more Sony camera and lens reviews on the way), but going forward, I will also be covering Canon DSLRs and lenses. I have been working on some big site-related projects lately and I will be posting some announcements later this month.
Does this Canon 5D Mark III coverage mean that I will be reviewing the upcoming Canon 5D Mark III? You betcha! While my primary focus will still remain Nikon DSLRs and lenses (hey, I am a Nikon shooter after-all!), I decided that I need to expand my scope to the competition. One of the biggest complaints that I get from many of our readers is that I only cover Nikon and it turns out that many of our readers shoot Canon. Hopefully this news will make our Canonite group happy!

YESSSSSSS!!!!!! =)
It would be very interesting to compare the Canon 5D Mark III with the Nikon D800 in both categories : still pictures and video.
Not sure how qualified I am to compare video, but still picture comparison is coming up, as soon as I have both in my hands!
CR has revealed 5DIII specs. The native ISO range of 5DIII is 100-25600 which is one stop better than D4!
I can’t believe if that camera has lower noise than D4. (even downsampled to 16mp)
Sade, I saw that – see the Canon 5D Mark III specifications that I have just posted!
Rest assured that it won’t have lower noise than D4 :)
Well, as long as 5DIII has worse or even equal noise compared to D4, I will be very happy with D800.
As you showed in a post and I also did it myself with D800 samples and even D3x samples, when the D800 output is downsampled in 16mp, it has almost the same amont of noise compared to D700 (may be a tad better but perhaps not a full stop better). D3s has one stop advantage over D700 (may be even less in lower iso like 3200)
D4 in terms of noise is very similar to D3s, base on a review I saw on the web. There are also D4 samples available in imaging resources and one can check.
Thus, simple math shows that if the D800 photos are downsampled to 16mp, the result must be only about 1-1.5 stop worse than D4 photos, in terms of noise.
I think one stop better noise from 5DIII is tolerable but not more. ;)
By the way, may I ask you who assured you that 5DIII has not lower noise than D4?
Sade, once I have the D800 and D4, I will post full reviews and comparisons against D3/D700, D3s, 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III (ouch, so much work coming up!), so you will be able to see more head-to-head comparisons later.
As for 5D Mark III having more noise than D4, I said that because of the pixel pitch. 5D Mark III has more pixels and higher pixel pitch, so at 100% view the D4 will produce cleaner results at high ISOs. Now will the 5D Mark III be better when down-sampled to 16 MP? We will have to see, once I have a sample to play with.
I read somewhere that there is a difference in the way Canon and NIkon determine max ISO. Something about Nikon measuring amount of noise and Canon using a more subjective method.
Maybe Nasim could start with an introduction that explains the differences between Canon and NIkon? (AF, Battery use etc etc)
Nasim; I hope you’re ready for all the fan, but mostly the hatemail you’ll be receiving once you start comparing!
Good luck!
RMT, hahaha, I know hatemail is coming big time! I posted a couple of Canon vs Nikon comparisons before and people were quite pissed :) Oh well, that’s the nature of camera comparisons I guess.
As for max ISO measurement and other Canon/Nikon differences, that’s an interesting topic that I might get into in more detail!
Having a household with both Canon (5dmkII) and Nikon (D700) it is good to see reviews of both lines. I have found no site equivalent to yours that I can rely on for good reviews of Canon lenses. I use yours for my Nikon purchases, but nice to have that resource for Canon.
Hopefully it does not add too much to your plate. Look forward to your reviews.
Thank you for your feedback Steven! I will do my best to balance comparisons between the two, but I can already smell a lot of negativity coming from either Nikon or Canon fans :)
One item of interest is the comparison between the Nikon 24-120 and the Canon 24-105. We have both and have been comparing them as they are very similar in performance. One thing we have noticed is that the Canon has tremendous issues with vignetting. In fact, we have found that it is pronounced on this lens even when closed-down, until about 35mm.
We have not noticed similar performance issues with the Nikon, small amounts of vignette at 24mm which quickly disappears at smaller aperatures.
Other than this, the lens is fabulous (both).
Have heard that Canon will have (has?) a camera that has a 11 or 12 FPS rate that will compete against the D4. If such exists, any plans to review?
I am a Nikon man myself, however I always like to know what Canon is doing. The competition between the two is good for the consumer, as it drives both companies to innovate. Good pictures are taken with both types of cameras, however, I believe that on average (for DSLRs) DxO rates Nikons higher than Canons (and I am sure I will catch flak for that comment).
I believe that few people will make a switch once a certain level of financial investment has been made, no matter what camera body comes along, as the investment in lenses tends to be higher. Brand loyality typically starts at a young age. If your dad drove a Ford, and shot with a Nikon, then you might drive and shoot the same brands as he did. Nothing wrong with test driving a Chevy (Canon), just doesn’t mean you will buy one.

William, you are probably referring to the Canon 1D X that was also recently announced. I do not think I will be able to review both the D4 and the 1D X at the same time, since they are high price items. However, since my plan is to review Canon gear in the future, I will definitely test 1D X at some point later…
I hope for a d800 VS. 5dMKIII high iso comparision!!!
Roberto, I will publish it as soon as I have both in my hands!
canon or nikon, both are the best thats why they still compete with each other..
I am sorry you are going to start reviewing Cannon eqpt.Cannon makes great gear but I’m a Nikon shooter and unlikely to change. I can get reviews of Cannon from a wide variety of sources. I wonder what value you will add that will set you apart from others? How many of your current readers will care? How will it be possible to do this with out diluting your current efforts?
Is there some sort of renumeration for doing this?
Glad to see that you will cover the newest Sony whenever the now long overdue successor to the full frame A900 emerges.
For anyone concerned, a “cannon” is a weapon of war, a “Canon” is a camera brand.
Just FYI
